13 marzo 2025 – Berlin aims to convert thousands of kilometres of the gas network into hydrogen pipelines, affecting the energy transition in the🇪🇺EU.
Yesterday, the German gas grid operator GASCADE began to fill the first section of the “Flow – making hydrogen happen” pipeline project, which aims to completely convert around 400 km of gas pipelines into transporting hydrogen by the end of 2025.
The project, launched in 2022, wants to develop a high-performance pipeline system for CO2-neutral hydrogen stretching from the Baltic Sea to industrial areas in the Southwest of Germany.
This project is a first of its kind at a global level.
The “Flow – making hydrogen happen” project is part of the larger German hydrogen core network, which is based on the reconversion of 60% of existing gas pipelines and the construction of 40% new pipelines strictly conceived to transport hydrogen. Reportedly, the H2 core network project will cost around €19 billion (more than $20.5 billion).
The realisation of the “Flow – making hydrogen happen” pipeline will establish an essential part of the North-South highway for hydrogen transportation. Germany stands at the center of the EU H2 strategy and without its core network, there is no green H2 future for Europe.
